A U.S. Perspective on Shipping Decarbonization
There is increasing pressure on the shipping sector to reduce its carbon emissions. The IMO is leading the effort, adopting a major reduction strategy that aims to reduce GHG emissions from shipping by 50 percent by 2050, and carbon intensity by at least 40 percent by 2030. The initial regulations being developed to implement the IMO strategy will likely enter into force in the year 2023, a date just around the corner. In the meantime, the Biden administration recently announced it will call for the IMO to dramatically accelerate these goals, in order to completely eliminate GHG emissions from shipping by 2050.
In this webinar, panelists discuss the regulatory framework at the IMO, legislative efforts in the United States to decarbonize shipping, and the implications of the new decarbonization requirements.
