Sydney G. Duncan

Sydney Duncan is a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) registered patent attorney. She concentrates her practice in patent prosecution and portfolio management.

Sydney has experience in drafting and prosecuting domestic and foreign patent applications, involving a variety of technologies such as medical devices and a variety of chemical and material-based technologies including food and nutrition, pharmaceuticals, batteries, display technologies, and environmental related technologies. Sydney has experience with the patent portfolio management of large global corporations to small start-up companies from the early developmental invention stage of patents to application preparation and examination and to patent grant and post patent grant.

Sydney also has experience on various other patent related issues including freedom-to-operate work with a focus on new product development and competitor portfolio analysis to identify references for invalidity and non-infringement opinions. Sydney also has experience performing analysis for patent portfolio acquisitions from the buyer’s side, including due diligence analysis on both small and large patent portfolios for US and foreign corporations.

Prior to joining the firm as an associate Sydney served as an Intellectual Property summer associate at the firm’s Chicago office for two summers. Through this role, Sydney conducted legal research and authored memoranda on technology and engineering patents. In addition, Sydney assembled claim charts and analyzed potential infringement claims. 

While at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Sydney participated in a clinic where she researched and drafted reports detailing patentability, as well as created presentations about current events in the industry. Prior to joining the firm, Sydney was a student volunteer at a patent hub where she participated in invention intake interviews and conducted research.
