Devon C. Beane

Devon Beane is the co-practice group coordinator in the firm’s IP Litigation practice group. She has experience leading litigation teams and trying patent cases throughout the country, including in district court, the International Trade Commission, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and the Federal Circuit. Over the past year, Devon has taken numerous cases to the eve of trial that successfully settled following favorable rulings on summary judgment and pre-trial motions. She also argued four IPR hearings, all of which resulted in final written decisions in her client’s favor. Devon is a member of the Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois.

Devon is experienced in all phases of patent litigation, from pre-suit investigations through trial and appeal. Leveraging this experience, Devon routinely helps clients assess their patent portfolios and counsels them on strategies worldwide for licensing, competitive infringement issues, and validity. Devon's patent experience spans a diverse set of technologies, including HIV immunoassays, cardiac monitors, strapping tools, optical transceivers, authentication systems, wireless services, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, stem cell technology, water filtration, and renewable energy. Devon also has experience with complex patent licensing agreements, trade secret litigation, unfair competition and Lanham Act litigation, breach of contract claims, employment restrictive covenant disputes, and pro bono asylum matters.

Devon serves on the hiring committee of the Chicago office, helps lead the firm’s summer associate program, and is an active member of the Chicago office’s Women in the Profession committee. Devon was ranked in 2024 by IAM Patent 1000 and by The Best Lawyers in America for her patent litigation experience. She was also recognized in 2024 as a Notable Leader in Accounting, Consulting and Law and in 2022 as a Notable Women in Law by Crain’s Chicago Business.

Before joining the firm, Devon served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Franklin U. Valderrama, the Honorable Sebastian T. Patti, and the Honorable William O. Maki in the General Chancery Division of the Cook County Circuit Court. As a judicial clerk, Devon drafted written opinions and bench memoranda on complex litigation matters, including temporary restraining orders, preliminary injunctions, class actions, and declaratory judgment actions. She also worked as an intellectual property research associate for the University of Illinois College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Economic Sciences.

During law school, Devon conducted several trials as a Senior Law Student Licensed under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 with the Macon County State's Attorney's Office and appeared in court to manage the traffic violation docket, including DUIs and suspended license issues. She was also a member of the Patent Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Law where she reviewed invention disclosures, performed patentability searches and drafted a patent application for University of Illinois student inventors.
