Dr. Lokan is an Australian and New Zealand patent attorney who has a technical background in chemistry. He has represented clients in a broad range of industries including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, mining, materials, semiconductors, food technology and biotechnology.
Dr. Lokan has a depth of experience across all aspects of Australian patent practice including patent drafting, patent prosecution, providing advice on the validity and infringement of patents and, in particular, conducting patent oppositions. Dr. Lokan has also been involved in a number of complex patent litigation matters before the Federal Court of Australia.
In his capacity as a New Zealand patent attorney, Dr. Lokan possesses considerable prosecution experience before the New Zealand Patent Office and regularly advises clients in relation to New Zealand patent law and practice.
Dr. Lokan also provides strategic advice to clients on the management and growth of intellectual property portfolios.
Dr. Lokan holds a Ph.D in the fields of organic chemistry and photochemistry. His doctoral research involved the synthesis of complex organic molecules for studying electron and energy transfer processes. He is the co-author of 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of the American Chemical Society. A number of these publications have been cited extensively in the literature.
Prior to joining K&L Gates, Dr. Lokan worked at a large specialist intellectual property law firm where he represented a range of clients including single inventors, start-up companies, universities and large multinational corporations.
