Mr. Chen is a real estate lawyer and has experience on advising on a wide range of property and commercial transactions including multi-jurisdictional retail, commercial and industrial leasing matters, project agreements, acquisitions and disposals of property, environmental advice, due diligence, general property advice and related commercial advice.

Mr. Chen focuses on tenant leasing matters and property and regulatory work in connection with infrastructure and industrial assets, including ports, electricity assets, and gas pipelines.

Professional Background

Mr. Chen joined the firm in 2006 as a real estate lawyer, before working internationally in Jersey, Channel Islands and subsequently in an in-house role in Singapore. Mr. Chen re-joined the firm as a real estate lawyer in Sydney in 2010.

  • Acting for a listed Chinese company on the acquisition of a portfolio of both greenfield and brownfield assets, each worth over AUD60 million, as part of their expansion into the Australian market, including participating in a public tender process, carrying out legal due diligence, and engaging consultants and co-ordinating technical due diligence on the properties.
  • Acting for a joint venture infrastructure company on the development of a new port facility and related infrastructure at Port Hedland in Western Australia, including advising on environmental approvals, compulsory land acquisition, port leasing, native title, land vesting, managed reserves and other aspects.
  • Acting for a major Australian gas supplier and pipeline operator on the relocations of certain gas pipelines, including associated property and easement issues.
  • Acting for a major international petroleum and service station corporation on leases and agreements for lease for service station sites, disposal of sites, and land contamination and remediation issues.
  • Acting for the owner of power generation and electricity assets on the subdivision of industrial facilities, the creation of various easements required for the operation of its generating facilities, property and easement issues associated with the privatisation of electricity assets and title issues.
  • Acting for a number of port operators and stevedoring companies on their port terminal facilities in Australia.
  • Acting for a major seafood retail and wholesale operator on a proposed redevelopment, including negotiating agreements with various state and local government authorities.
  • Acting for a large private property developer on a range of acquisitions of large parcels of rural land for major residential re-zoning and subdivision projects including option agreements, contracts for sale of land, assignment deeds, and investigation and advice on title issues.
  • Acting on the property aspects of major corporate mergers and acquisitions, including in relation to multinational producers of food and flavour products.
