Mr. Brown has extensive experience in litigious and non-litigious disputes. He has advised and represented clients in the energy and resources industry including, oil and gas, nickel, gold, uranium, iron ore and coal in relation to matters both specific to the industry as well as general commercial disputes.

Mr. Brown's work has also covered insolvency, managed investment schemes, private equity funds, leisure and entertainment (including government regulation), property, white collar crime, as well as building and construction.

His practice extends to matters in most Australian State and Federal Courts as well as administrative tribunals. Mr. Brown also has experience in conducting commercial arbitrations and has resolved a number of matters through court-supervised or informal mediations.

Professional Background

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Brown was a partner in an Australian national law firm for four years and prior to this, a partner with a boutique Western Australian law firm for three years.

Mr. Brown regularly presents seminars on various issues concerning commercial litigation, including arbitration and risk avoidance.
  • Advising and representing the liquidators (Ferrier Hodgson) of the Great Southern Group in relation to the on-going liquidation of the Great Southern Group of Companies and in relation to the winding up of a number of agricultural managed investment schemes in what is a billion dollar liquidation.
  • Acting for Roc Oil Limited in Supreme Court proceedings in relation to a dispute over production sharing contracts involving various farm-in parties concerning entitlements to cost oil in oil fields situated in Mauritania.
  • Advising and representing Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd and related companies in relation to a number of joint-venture contractual and royalty disputes, as well as other commercial disputes.
  • Advising and representing BC Iron Limited in relation to a dispute concerning an off-take agreement including providing representation in interstate arbitral proceedings.
  • Advising Beadell Resources Limited in respect of a dispute concerning its joint operating and iron ore and gold concentrate supply agreements with Anglo American's Brazilian subsidiary.
  • Advising and representing commercial clients in relation to commercial disputes involving the unwinding of partnerships, joint property holdings and, trusts and companies arising from joint business.
  • Applying to the Federal Court for obtain appointment of receivers over assets of a private equity fund and proceedings for breach of trust, possible breaches of requirements to register managed investment schemes.
