Nicholas Barone is an associate in the firm’s Pittsburgh office. He is a USPTO-registered patent attorney and focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution. Mr. Barone has experience in the preparation and prosecution of utility and design patents before the USPTO along with the prosecution of foreign patent applications. He also assists with the management of clients’ patent portfolios and deals with many legal issues, including patent term adjustment. He has dealt with a wide range of technologies, including medical devices, industrial processing equipment and methods, alternative and green energy devices, extractive industry devices, and consumer products including office supplies and equipment, vehicle accessories, and beverage containers.

Professional Background

Mr. Barone participated in the firm’s Summer Associate program where he worked as on-site counsel for a local industrial manufacturing company in 2015. His experience included assisting with intellectual property portfolio strategy and legal research.

Prior to working for the firm, Mr. Barone attended the University of Pittsburgh where received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, graduating magna cum laude. While attending the University of Pittsburgh, he also received minors in Chemistry, Bioengineering, and an undergraduate certificate in Nuclear Engineering. In addition to his school work, Mr. Barone was a member of the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band and Jazz Band. During his undergraduate tenure, he participated in the university sponsored CO-OP program where he worked for DuPont at their Deepwater New Jersey facility in the Fluorinated Products group.

After receiving his undergraduate degree, Mr. Barone worked for Peoples Natural Gas Company in Pittsburgh as a pipeline engineer. While at Peoples Natural Gas, he worked on designing and installing natural gas measurement and pressure regulation stations, managing projects in business development, and used smart pig technology to assess the structural viability of high pressure natural gas transmission lines. Mr. Barone assisted with the processing of natural gas storage wells into an existing storage facility into the Oriskany sandstone formation. In one notable project, he worked to directionally drill a high pressure natural gas line under the Allegheny River to serve a steel processing facility. While at Peoples, Mr. Barone attended Pitt and received a Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering.


Mr. Barone served on the Executive Board of the Duquesne Law Review as the Business Manager as well as the Vice President of the Duquense Energy and Mineral Law Society. In addition, Mr. Barone received several awards and recognitions while attending law school. Mr. Barone received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in: Contracts, Evidence, Oil and Gas Law, Strategic International Transactions, Sales, and Basic Federal Income Taxation.
