Kevin McCormick is an associate in the Chicago office, a USPTO-registered patent attorney, and a member of the IP Procurement and Portfolio Management practice group.

Mr. McCormick focuses his practice on patent portfolio management and counseling, opinion work, and due diligence. He has domestic and foreign patent prosecution experience involving a variety of technology sectors, including aerospace devices, advanced materials, apparel and active wear, computer memory devices, computer networking and virtualization, drilling systems, equine and livestock devices, GPS technology, infusion pumps, medical diagnostic and monitoring devices, smart-TVs, e-commerce applications, mobile device software, business methods, and variety of miscellaneous mechanical and electromechanical devices.

Mr. McCormick has experience in large volume freedom to operate and landscape study work, including both technical and legal IP portfolio investigation and analysis. He has performed patentability, invalidity, and infringement analysis, including subsequent counseling, over a wide range of technologies. Likewise, Mr. McCormick has evaluated commercial products, offerings, and related patent portfolios for acquisition opportunities, licensing, and litigation strategy.

Additionally, Mr. McCormick has experience in U.S. Patent Office litigation, primarily through a number of inter partes review proceedings spanning all stages of the post-grant timeline.

Professional Background

Prior to his career in law, Mr. McCormick worked for GE Healthcare, where he gained valuable experience in both design and manufacturing engineering with roles related to computed tomography (CT), X-ray, and patient monitoring technologies. He also worked as an associate for an international trade compliance firm, assisting clients with compliance management, commodity classification, and export licensing requirements.

During law school, Mr. McCormick was a research assistant for Professor Kali N. Murray. In this role, he helped prepare an amicus brief to the Supreme Court of the United States regarding Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. He was also a student leader for the academic success program at his law school. Mr. McCormick gained patent prosecution experience at a Milwaukee-based law firm, prior to joining K&L Gates as a summer associate in 2013.

Mr. McCormick’s pro bono experience includes representing clients in guardianship and family court proceedings. He has also represented pro bono clients in various intellectual property matters.
