Karen Poy is a partner in our Miami office, practicing in the area of complex commercial litigation, and has been with K&L Gates since joining the firm as a summer associate in 2005. She has represented clients in a range of matters, including contract disputes; noncompetition and trade secret misappropriation cases; joint venture disputes; employment discrimination cases; and class action litigation. Ms. Poy also has federal trial experience and extensive arbitration experience (before the AAA and JAMS).

Professional Background

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Ms. Poy was a judicial intern for the Honorable Ursula M. Ungaro, United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Before law school, Ms. Poy worked for VistaPrint.com in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Pro Bono Activities
Ms. Poy, as part of a team of lawyers in the Miami office, resolved a pro bono matter involving the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. The client, a Colombian citizen, sought to recover his nine-year-old son, who had been abducted to the United States by the child’s mother. In a two-day trial, the team successfully persuaded the Court to order the mother to return the child to the client in Colombia.

  • On behalf of a national food production and distribution company, prevailed at trial and successfully defended against breach of contract claims by its temporary labor provider, and obtained a $1 million judgment for prevailing party attorneys’ fees.
  • On behalf of a local wellness and weight management center in Florida, successfully obtained a temporary restraining order preventing a former employee from starting a competing business in the restricted geographic area.
  • On behalf of a leading financial services firm, successfully obtained dismissal of claims (including Rule 10b-5 and fraud claims) in a case involving a third-party Ponzi scheme.
  • On behalf of a local medical practice in Florida, successfully defended against a former employee’s claim for unemployment compensation.
  • On behalf of a national food production and distribution company, helped successfully obtain at trial a take-nothing judgment in an unfair competition case, where plaintiffs had sought $5.6 million in actual damages and $25 million in punitive damages.
  • On behalf of an electric company acting as indemnitor to bond issuers in connection with a residential and commercial development project in a Florida city, helped negotiate a favorable settlement at mediation with the city.
  • On behalf of a prepaid debit card company, helped negotiate a settlement to resolve a government investigation of the company’s marketing practices.
  • On behalf of a global wireless distributor, served as the lead associate in multiple litigation and arbitration disputes with its joint venture partner, including successfully obtaining an arbitration award regarding the proper composition of the joint venture’s management board.
