Joseph Lee is an associate in the Doha Office of K&L Gates and handles both contentious and non-contentious matters relating to real estate, construction, project finance and corporate issues. Mr. Lee also serves as an economic legal counsel to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Qatar. Before he earned his J.D. degree from the University of Michigan in 2010, he graduated from Seoul National University, Department of English Literature (B.A.) in 2005. Mr. Lee is a member of the New York Bar.

Professional Background

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Lee was an associate at a leading law firm in Seoul, South Korea. He previously worked as in-house counsel for Samsung C&T Corporation, as well as an associate at a litigation boutique firm in New York. Mr. Lee’s prior experience also includes interning with the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines, and working as a Judicial Intern in the Chamber of the Honorable Stephen J. Murphy, of the US District Court of Eastern District of Michigan. Mr. Lee also served as a Sergeant in the 34th Support Group to the U.S. Army KATUSA (Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army).

  • Advised Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning in its tender process to develop workers’ accommodations in Qatar on a public-private partnership basis.
  • Advised Hospitality Development Company in its negotiation of a hotel management agreement with Trump Group to develop and operate Trump Hotel at the Pearl, Qatar.
  • Advised Emirates REIT in its development of a school in Dubai with Jebel Ali Primary School and with Swiss International Scientific School.
  • Advised ITNL Consortium in its development/operation of parking facilities for Dubai Court.
  • Advised Manateq in its development of free economic zones in Qatar.
  • Advised Samsung C&T on Qurayyah IPP in Saudi Arabia as a sponsor and EPC contractor.
  • Advised Samsung C&T on Gaziantep Healthcare PPP in Turkey as a lead sponsor and contractor.
  • Advised Samsung C&T on Kirikkale IPP in Turkey as a sponsor and EPC contractor.
  • Advised Samsung C&T on Chinese Mixed-Use Real Estate Development projects in Dalian and Qinzhou.

Dispute Resolution

  • Advised Hyosung in its litigation with a subcontractor in Qatar.
  • Advised Almana Group in its potential dispute with Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in connection with a construction project to develop a World Cup stadium.
  • Advised C&C Lightway in its dispute with Aamal in connection with a joint venture in Qatar.
  • Advised Hyundai E&C in an international arbitration against the owner of Yeosu oil tank terminal for a claim of approximately KRW 70 billion.
  • Advised an Iranian company in its litigation for the return of a forfeited deposit from the creditors of a target company in connection with a failed acquisition of a Korean target.
  • Advised Samsung C&T in an ICC arbitration with the equipment supplier.

Mergers and Acquisitions

  • Advised CJ CGV in its attempt to acquire Sundance Cinemas in the US.
  • Advised Intervest Global Pharmaceutical Fund in its acquisition of a US subsidiary of Genexine, established to develop gene therapy vaccine and long-acting growth hormone.
  • Advised a Taiwanese company in its acquisition of a Korean company in rehabilitation.
  • Advised H Fund and L Fund in their investment in a US company N by acquiring its series B preferred shares.
  • Advised on the establishment of a joint venture between Korean and Japanese chemical companies.

Corporate, Finance and Other

  • Advised LS Cable in connection with its employment law issues.
  • Advised a Vatican foundation in its establishment of a legal entity in South Korea.
  • Advised a Korean ECA in its negotiation of the credit agreement for an export credit in connection with a purchase of telecommunication equipment from Samsung Electronics to Sprint.
