Jennifer Paterson is a counsel in the firm’s Dubai office, based in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). She concentrates her practice on litigation and dispute resolution. Ms. Paterson advises and represents both UAE-based and international clients in matters involving real estate disputes, employment disputes (both under DIFC Employment Law and the UAE Labour Law) and commercial disputes, in arbitration proceedings, before the DIFC Courts and more widely across the UAE.

Ms. Paterson has been involved in local and international arbitration proceedings administered by all the major local arbitration centres, including the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), the Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Centre (ADCCAC) and the DIFC-LCIA, as well ad hoc proceedings and arbitration proceedings administered by the ICC. As well as being able to navigate arbitration proceedings in a variety of forums, Ms. Paterson possesses a strong understanding of the UAE Civil Procedure Code that often governs local proceedings. Ms. Paterson also has experience in enforcing local arbitral awards (seated in Dubai and the DIFC) overseas.

Ms. Paterson has full rights of audience before the DIFC Courts as well as the Courts of England and Wales and has been instructed as trial counsel in a broad range of contested matters. She has been instructed by the UK Financial Services Authority and the UK Serious Fraud Office in a number of complex fraud investigations.

Professional Background

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Paterson worked as a dispute resolution associate for another firm in the Dubai International Financial Centre. She started her legal career as a self-employed barrister in London.

  • Representing developers in their disputes with off-plan investors in relation to various residential, commercial and mixed-use projects throughout the Emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi (DIAC, ADCCAC and DIFC Courts)
  • Representing a publicly listed foreign company in a claim arising out of a proposed residential/commercial property development in the Emirate of Ajman (DIAC)
  • Representing an international telecommunications company in disputes relating to the provisions of advisory services (DIFC-LCIA)
  • Representing a Qatari entity in a commercial dispute in ad hoc arbitration proceedings in Qatar (UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules)
  • Representing the owner of the largest refinery in Libya in connection with disputes with its crude oil supplier and breaches of a Feedstock Supply Agreement (ICC)
  • Representing an Emirati conglomerate against its co-venturer with respect to disputes and breaches of a Shareholders’ Agreement relating to the ownership and control of an oil refinery in Libya (ICC)
  • Representing a foreign company in disputes against local entities for hotel management services rendered in the Emirates of Dubai and Fujairah (ICC)
  • Representing UAE-based clients in claims arising out of shareholders’ agreements relating to both UAE onshore companies and foreign companies (DIAC)
  • Representing UAE-based clients in claims arising out of commercial agreements containing non-solicitation, non-compete and confidentiality provisions (DIAC, DIFC Courts)
