Jay Im is a corporate lawyer whose work focuses on cross border M&A, foreign investment, and technology licensing.  He has negotiated and closed landmark transactions valued in the billions of dollars and spanning several continents. He is well-versed with the business practices and cultures of dozens of countries, which he brings to bear to achieve his clients’ goals in a targeted and tailored manner.

Mr. Im also possesses a specialized skill set in entertainment law, particularly in the areas of film production and distribution, broadcast format licensing, live event and concert planning, artist management, and theatrical investment. He is named as the legal advisor in the credits of several popular movies and programs.

Furthermore, Mr. Im is one of the early proponents of e-sports and has advised several of the world’s leading game companies with the development of tournaments, licensing of programs, structuring of sponsorships and fostering of teams.

Professional Background

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Im led the International Legal Affairs team at Korea’s largest entertainment and media company. He also has over a decade’s worth of experience working at some of Korea’s leading law firms and business conglomerates.

  • Represented Fortune 500 clients in licensing IP rights of petrochemicals, catalysts, and other chemical compounds to and from various international producers, distributors, and manufacturers.
  • Represented Korean electronics conglomerates in cross-licensing patents in a variety of high-tech industries.
  • Represented Korea’s largest entertainment company in hundreds of format licensing, program licensing, and option deals for film and television.
  • Represented fashion houses in coordinating efforts of various governmental agencies including the police, prosecutors, and customs offices to combat infringement and counterfeited goods.

Dispute Resolution
  • Represented a Korean electronics conglomerate in a settled negotiation with the European Commission reducing the amount in dispute by 60 percent.
  • Represented Korea’s largest entertainment company in recovering millions of dollars from film studios in the United States and Europe.
  • Represented a Dutch tanker company in arbitration proceedings before the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board.
  • Represented a Korean electronics conglomerate in defending against a class action lawsuit while simultaneously negotiating scope of indemnification with OEM partner.
