Jason Novak is a partner in the firm’s San Francisco office, where he focuses his practice on IP transactions, diligence, procurement and portfolio management for clients in the biotech (with emphasis in life sciences tooling), analytical instrumentation, software (with emphasis in bioinformatics), chemical, mechanical, medical device, food and electrochemical industries. Between firm and in-house roles, Mr. Novak has extensive experience in IP strategy and patent portfolio management, preparation and prosecution, oppositions, counseling of various legal and non-legal company functions, licensing and technology transactions, building out-licensing programs, freedom-to-operate clearances, various types of due diligence, IP training of non-legal personnel, risk recognition & management, and dispute resolution.

Professional Background

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Novak was the director (IP counsel) for an American multinational, biotechnology product development company, where he led a team of lawyers and agents to manage all worldwide IP needs in the company’s genetic sciences instrumentation and software businesses. From 2006 to 2011, Mr. Novak was an associate at K&L Gates, where he concentrated his practice in intellectual property in the medical device, food, food process engineering, electrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Before transitioning to the legal industry, Mr. Novak was a research engineer for a leading food product company, where he led numerous product and process redesigns, reformulations and commercializations. Such work required knowledge in areas such as flavor chemistry, emulsion chemistry, chemical engineering and food process engineering. Mr. Novak’s experience as both a corporate engineer and an in-house IP counsel director has allowed him to gather expertise in dealing with various corporate functions from both an R&D and legal perspective.
