Gordie Verhovek is an associate in the Seattle office of K&L Gates. He focuses his practice on various aspects of commercial real estate, including acquisitions and sales, real estate financing and loans, commercial leasing, and real estate development. Mr. Verhovek’s experience includes issues related to commercial mortgages and financing, hotels, farmland, energy projects, shopping centers, and other commercial mixed-use properties.

Mr. Verhovek also has experience in addressing regulatory issues affecting the food industry, and advises clients on regulatory matters relating to the processing, manufacturing, and distribution of food products. This experience includes assistance with state, county, and local permitting requirements and product-specific restrictions for facilities storing and distributing shelf-stable, refrigerated, and frozen foods at retail.

In addition, Mr. Verhovek advises employers on a wide range of labor and employment issues, including hiring, discipline, termination, discrimination, harassment, noncompetition, labor relations, wage and hour matters, payroll deductions, and employment transitions necessitated by mergers and acquisitions.

Professional Background

Mr. Verhovek was previously a judicial extern to the Honorable William H. Orrick of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. In this role, he conducted legal research, drafted judicial orders, and prepared bench memoranda on a variety of ongoing civil cases.

During law school, he worked with the East Bay Community Law Center’s Neighborhood Justice Clinic, where he provided direct legal services to low-income clients on a variety of consumer law issues.

He was a K&L Gates summer associate in 2013.

  • Represented a client on the acquisition of a luxury Caribbean resort property
  • Represented a municipality in Western Washington on the acquisition of a large downtown tract and subsequent redevelopment of downtown core, including new infrastructure, residential, and hotel development
  • Represented a client on the acquisition of almond and grape land in California, and seven related post-closing lease transactions, including a shared water management agreement
  • Prepared form leases for a property manager to use with respect to a multi-state agricultural land portfolio, including leases for cash rent, flex rent, crop share, and custom farming arrangements
  • Counseled a public corporation on permitting, licensing, and other regulatory compliance requirements applicable to its food distribution facilities storing shelf-stable, refrigerated and frozen foods in various states
  • Counseled and advised a public corporation on the applicability and requirements of state and local “bag ban” restrictions for multiple states
  • Represented an institutional investor on the acquisition of farmland and related agricultural assets held in national farmland portfolio
  • Represented a client in connection with the real estate issues related to its acquisition of a solar energy portfolio with solar energy systems in various states, including California, Oregon, Utah and Vermont
  • Represented a landlord in connection with leasing and title issues related to the leasing of property for wind energy generation projects, including development, ownership and operation of wind turbine generators and related energy facilities in California
