Mr. Smith is a property lawyer. He is experienced in all aspects of property law including acquisitions and sales, retail and commercial leasing, and planning and environmental issues. His practice has a particular focus on retail and commercial leasing. He also has wide experience in infrastructure agreements and charging mechanisms. Mr. Smith acts for clients ranging across publicly listed property development companies and trusts, local governments, and private developers. He provides practical, commercial advice to his clients in clear and concise terms.

Speaking Engagements

Mr. Smith regularly presents seminars and training workshops about leasing and infrastructure matters, both in-house for clients and for professional education bodies.
  • Acting for a listed Australian property trust on retail leases for its shopping centres in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory for the past seven years. This has involved construction and implementation of a proprietary real-time, online, matter-tracking, information and communication system for the client to control bulk retail leasing matters.
  • Acting for the past five year for an unlisted Australian property funds management, investment, and development company on retail leases for its shopping centres in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • Acting for various clients including listed and unlisted property trusts and investment companies in the acquisition and sale of retail, commercial, industrial, and office buildings throughout Queensland.
  • Acting for various clients including listed and unlisted property trusts, investment companies, and developers in the acquisition of sites, development, leasing, and sale of commercial, industrial, office, and retail projects throughout Queensland.
  • Advising Ipswich City Council in the negotiation, preparation and implementation of a major infrastructure agreement taking a green field site to a master planned city for over 100,000 residents with associated commercial, retail, industrial, and community facilities in Queensland. The agreement was the first of its type and involves infrastructure expenditure of over AUD3 billion over an anticipated project life of 45 years.
  • Acting for local governments and developers in the negotiation and completion of numerous infrastructure agreements in Queensland.
  • Providing strategic town planning and environment advice to numerous developers (including listed and unlisted companies and property trusts) on development proposals of all types throughout Queensland.
  • Providing to a large Queensland port authority strategic advice about planning, environment, and infrastructure matters in connection with the proposed redevelopment of approximately 50 hectares of formerly industrial land for high and medium density residential and associated mixed uses.
  • Conducting applications and trials in the Queensland Planning and Environment Court on behalf of numerous clients, including the clients mentioned above, in connection with development projects.
