Barry McHugh is a senior associate in the firm’s London office and a member of the Real Estate, Investment, Development and Finance practice group.

Mr. McHugh focuses his practice on complex real estate transactions including acquisitions, disposals, leasing, asset management, development and property finance. Mr. McHugh has a wealth of experience in the retail sector having acted for numerous owners of shopping centres and retail parks across the UK.

Professional Background

Mr McHugh qualified as a solicitor in 2006. Prior to joining the firm, he worked in the real estate department at a leading UK law firm.

  • Acting for TH Real Estate’s Shopping Centre Fund on its £140m acquisition from Land Securities PLC of a 50% stake in Princesshay Shopping Centre, Exeter
  • Acting for TH Real Estate’s Retail Warehouse Fund on the purchase of Borehamwood Shopping Park for £105m from LaSalle Investment Management
  • Acting for TH Real Estate’s Retail Warehouse Fund in the £78m sale of a retail park in Farnborough to Lothbury Property Trust and separately on the £57m sale of Kingsway Retail Park, Derby to St James's Place Property Unit Trust
  • Acting for a Reassure (a Swiss Re fund) on the purchase from IM Properties PLC of two industrial units in the Midlands for £25m
  • Acting for a Hong Kong listed client, YGM Asset Management Ltd, in the purchase of an office building in the west end of London for £22m and the subsequent re-development and pre-letting of the property to a restaurant operator and an office occupier.
  • Acting for fashion retailer, Aquascutum, on the leasing of their retail stores in Great Marlborough Street W1, Westfield London, Kensington and Canary Wharf.
  • Acting for a major UK investment fund in the £40 million+ disposal of a prominent office building in Manchester. 
  • Acting for a FTSE100 property company in the pre-letting of a major city-centre retail development in the north of England, including negotiating agreements for lease with a variety of national and international retailers (often involving complex rent phasing, co-tenancy and turnover rent provisions) 
  • Acting for a major UK investment fund in the sale of two business parks in the Greater London area. 
  • Acting for a FTSE100 property company in the negotiation of a development agreement with an international hotel chain to create a 128 bedroom hotel in London (involving a high degree of overlap with the construction and planning teams and advice on rights of light) 
  • Acting on a variety of different corporate occupiers taking leases of office premises including a big four accountancy firm, an international software company, an international business solutions company and a firm of patent attorneys. 
  • Representing two fashion retailers taking new leases and assignments at numerous schemes (including Manchester, Sheffield, Westfield Stratford and Glasgow) as they expanded their respective brands throughout the country 
  • Acting for the property arm of a major utilities company in the sale of surplus land (both contaminated and uncontaminated) including dealing with environmental warranties and negotiating clawback/overage provisions 
  • Providing property support in the acquisition of an offshore oil and gas drilling company including carrying out due diligence and negotiating property warranties in respect of 15 properties across both Scotland and England.
