Aloysius Chang is an associate in the Singapore office where his practice focuses on international arbitration and commercial disputes. He has been involved in many cross border disputes particularly across Asia and focuses on energy, commodities and construction disputes.

Of note, Aloysius is the winner of the Christopher Bathurst Prize 2016, for his written legal advice in relation to the enforcement of arbitral awards annulled at the seat of arbitration. As the 1st prize winner, Aloysius spent five weeks with Fountain Court Chambers in London, where he worked on complex and high-value disputes with prominent barristers, including Queen's Counsel.

Professional Background

Previously, Aloysius trained in the dispute resolution department of a major law firm in Singapore before joining Michael Hwang Chambers, where he served as legal assistant and arbitration clerk to Mr Michael Hwang S.C.. His experience includes assisting arbitral tribunals in commercial and investment treaty arbitration across various institutional rules (ICC, SIAC, DIAC, ICSID, UNCITRAL), and also assisting on appellate matters before the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts.

International Arbitration / Commercial Disputes
  • Assisted in an ICC arbitration concerning a construction dispute between English and Israeli entities with over US$100 million in at stake.
  • Assisted in a multi-million dollar private equity dispute between Singapore, Indian, BVI and Hong Kong entities involving arbitral, court and mediation proceedings.
  • Advised a PRC State-owned entity on setting aside proceedings in Malaysia and on resisting enforcement proceedings in Hong Kong on the basis of sovereign immunity.
  • Advised the liquidators of an Indonesian entity on potential claims and issues arising from gasoline supply contracts with foreign national oil and gas companies, and NOC-related trading companies.
  • Advised an Indian entity on potential contractual defences with regard to a commodities dispute with a PRC entity governed by PRC law.
  • Advised an Indian entity on potential contractual defences with regard to disputes arising from coal supply contracts governed by English law.
  • Advised a South Korean entity with regard to a sale of ships dispute with a Greek entity governed by English law.
  • Advised a Singapore entity on resisting enforcement of a USA judgment awarding non-compensatory and non-economic damages in an employment dispute.
  • Assisted in investigations concerning issues arising from Operation Car Wash in Brazil.
  • Assisted in an advisory role in an ICDR arbitration concerning a patent dispute between American and Taiwanese MNCs.
  • Assisted in the drafting of an expert report on bias challenges in support of an application to challenge an arbitrator’s appointment in a JCAA arbitration.

  • Appointed as tribunal secretary in an ad hoc arbitration concerning a telecommunications dispute between Middle Eastern entities with over OMR 10 million at stake.
  • Appointed as tribunal secretary in an ICC arbitration concerning a product liability dispute between English and Indian entities with over GBP 26 million at stake.
  • Appointed as tribunal secretary in an ICC arbitration concerning a shareholders’ dispute between Chinese entities with over USD 15 million at stake.
